We’re a volunteer-led organization, striving to act as an advocate to protect and improve our neighborhood. Since 2005, our dedicated members have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Aileen-Willowbrook area remains a safe, welcoming, and vibrant community for all who call it home.

EMPOWERING OUR COMMUNITY

Our Mission: To independently represent the best interests of the residents within the Aileen-Willowbrook catchment area.

We focus on keeping our members informed about important issues and improvement initiatives that affect our neighbourhood.

Our efforts include meeting and lobbying with Markham City Council, as well as engaging with Regional, Provincial, and Federal Governments, and other influential groups, to advocate for meaningful changes and enhancements in our community.

OUR WORK

Keeping our Neighborhood Beautiful, Healthy and Safe

Through its history, AWRA has taken many actions to improve our community, including:

Fighting to reduce pollution from the industrial area
Advocating to replace the Huntington Park bridge ( completed )
Advocating to make the Maple Valley ravine accessible and connecting existing parks into a walkable network
Adopting Windy Hill park and organizing seasonal park cleanings
Working with the City of Markham to enhance speed humps on Willowbrook and to reduce speed racing on Green Lane
Promoting AWRA’s Flooding Remediation Program to install Backwater Valves leveraging Markham rebate program
Fighting illegal signage on public property , such as mailboxes.

Area Development

With current development trends potentially quadrupling Ward 1 population over the next 25 years, AWRA is committed to preserving the future livability of our area. We participate in and monitor urban planning initiatives and development applications that may affect our community, including:

Proposing a new urban vision for Bayview & John area (area improvement)
Opposing the overdevelopment of Thornhill Square
Advocating against the Shouldice overdevelopment proposal (now a public park)
Representing community interests and monitoring the progress on developments that may impact area's livability, such as: Bridge TOC (40,000 units), Langstaff East MZO (20,000 units), Yonge Corridor (20,000 units), Bayview & Romfield (Dolarama Plaza), and 2300 John St (& Leslie)
Participating on Markham urban planning initiatives including: Official Plan Update, Housing Needs Assessment, Inclusionary Zoning, Citywide Parking Strategy, among others
Monitoring Markham Committee and Council Agendas to ensure our voice is heard on issues that can impact our area
